The rune Nauðiz means “need, distress”. It stands as the antithesis of the rune wunjō, carrying the implicit notion of a cold, difficult climate. Old Norse sources also support interpretations such as “strong desire” and “constraint”. In Hugrheim, the hidden tenth world of Yggdrasil in Eihwar's mythology, Veiðhimadhr (the Hunter) is the manifestation of Nauðiz, our ultimate trial. He is our own fear. We are our worst enemy. To rise, we must burn ourselves—and be reborn from our own ashes.
