Chaos in California Today! Extreme Blizzard Causing Many Accident in Mammoth Lakes
Mammoth Lakes, a mountain town located in California's Eastern Sierra Nevada, experienced an exceptionally severe blizzard in early January 2026. Heavy rain alternating with heavy snow fell relentlessly for several days, burying roads, blocking access to various areas, and leaving residents in a state of emergency. This phenomenon was a combination of a winter storm and a large atmospheric system carrying moisture from the Pacific Ocean, known as an atmospheric river, which then met with the cold air of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The result was extreme snowfall, reaching over five feet in just 72 hours in Mammoth Lakes, making the small town one of the most severe storm centers in California that winter. In addition to the avalanches, the storm also caused a series of traffic accidents. Dozens of accidents were reported on Interstate 80 near Truckee and Donner Lake, including large trucks derailing and private vehicles colliding due to poor visibility. Local police stated that a snowstorm was a major factor, with injuries and several fatalities reported. Slippery road conditions, coupled with continued snowfall, made it nearly impossible for drivers to control their vehicles. On the route to Mammoth Lakes, a minivan skidded and struck a guardrail, seriously injuring several passengers. Ambulances arriving to evacuate the victims were hampered by the heavy snow, delaying the rescue effort.
