State of emergency due to heavy rain in Malaga.
Rivers overflowed, causing panic among residents, and the government issued a second ES-Alert.
Heavy rains from Hurricane Francis caused the flow of major rivers in Malaga province to rise sharply, especially in the Guadalhorce basin, on Sunday afternoon, January 4, 2026.
The government has sent ES-Alert reminders to 27 municipalities in the Costa del Sol and Guadalhorce regions of Malaga province, as well as to five municipalities in Cádiz, due to the ongoing severe weather and hydrological situation.
Flooding was recorded in the Monda and Cártama areas.
Water entered homes, flooded streets, and parks.
This flooding has led to the evacuation of approximately thirty people in the Estación de Cártama area of Málaga, most of whom have been resettled with family and friends.
In Marbella, firefighters had to assist people whose vehicles were trapped in the floodwaters.
This situation is also impacting rail transport.
Commuter line services were suspended following flooding.
Malaga also canceled the parade and celebration of the Three Kings scheduled for this Sunday due to rain.
La Cañada and Plaza Mayor will be closed this Sunday due to heavy rain in Marbella and Malaga.
Continued river level rises could lead to emergencies. The Guadalhorce, Grande, and Turón rivers continue to show a rising trend.
Records from the Hidrosur network and emergency services confirm a very rapid response of riverbeds, with some sections reaching levels close to the flood risk warning threshold.
Local authorities urge residents to be aware of river flooding, take extra precautions (such as climbing to higher ground in case of flooding and avoiding driving through flooded areas, riverbeds, or river crossings), and heed the recommendations of security and emergency services regarding possible evacuations.
