The cancelled Game Boy Color version of the original Resident Evil was in development around 1999–2000 by HotGen, with the ambitious goal of delivering a surprisingly faithful adaptation of the PlayStation game on Nintendo’s handheld. The project sought to preserve core elements such as locations, puzzles, dialogue, and the classic fixed-camera perspective, using scaled and pre-rendered sprites to simulate a 3D look within the Game Boy Color’s strict technical limits. Despite these efforts, the game struggled with performance, memory, and cartridge space constraints, and Capcom ultimately chose to cancel it, reportedly believing the hardware could not properly represent the Resident Evil experience.
In 2011, two separate builds were preserved thanks to Kiff Storey and Bowker. One of these was close to completion but lacked intro titles and endings, still contained debug screens, and was estimated to be around 90% complete. Due to its unfinished state, it featured numerous glitches that required hacks to progress past certain areas. In late 2025, however, a more complete final build from the point of cancellation was preserved, thanks to Pete Frith. While still not fully finished—estimated at roughly 98% complete—it includes more content and may now be playable to the end. Some players have confirmed that using Jill Valentine, it is possible to reach the finale, defeat the Tyrant, and trigger the ending screen. Others report that when playing as Chris Redfield, the door meant to open with the flamethrower fails to do so, resulting in a softlock.
This final build removes the debug data seen in earlier versions and adds proper introduction credit screens. End sequences are also present in the game data, suggesting that full completion may be possible. To help explore unfinished or hidden content, several hacks were created. One allows players to select either character and jump directly to their respective ending sequences. Another places the player near the final Tyrant encounters: with Chris, the Tyrant appears in the outdoor finale area, while with Jill, it appears in the lab as a moving silhouette. Although the Tyrant cannot be killed with the knife when playing as Chris, Jill can defeat it with a gun at the helicopter pad, triggering the ending. A third hack functions as a scene and music player, allowing all animated scenes for each character to be viewed in sequence—some possibly unused—as well as access to all sound effects and the full soundtrack composed by Mark Cooksey.
