The screenplay was written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, based on the Marvel Comics adventures of the superhero Spider-Man. It is intended to be the 40th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) media franchise, the fourth in Phase 6, and the fourth in the MCU film series about Spider-Man.
Sony began working on the fourth Spider-Man film in the MCU in August 2019, along with the comic book film Spider-Man: No Way Home. Producer Amy Pascal revealed in November 2021 that the film is intended to begin a new trilogy of Spider-Man films with Holland. Sony and Marvel Studios began actively working on the story in December. McKenna and Sommers began writing the script in February 2023. Cretton began negotiations to star in September 2024. He officially became director in October, with filming set to take place in London from June to October 2025.
While the script was being finished, the studios began meeting with directors. Destin Daniel Cretton became the main contender for the post of director. He began negotiations in September 2024. Cretton previously worked with Marvel Studios on the comic book film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the miniseries Wonder Man. Meanwhile, Holland and Zendaya discussed the production of the film with producers and were in talks about returning to their roles, and filming was scheduled for early 2025. Snyder said that they want to release the film in 2026, and doubted Zendaya's participation in the filming, since the actress is scheduled to film the third season of Euphoria and the third part of Dune in 2025. In October, Holland said that he was pleased with the film after reading the draft of the script with Zendaya, but believed that the script needed to be revised. The actor also said that filming would begin in the summer of 2025. In addition, Holland is scheduled to film the Avengers: Judgment Day crossover and Christopher Nolan's Odyssey that same year, both set to be released in 2026.
