Based on the novel by screenwriter Ichirō Ikeda, also known as Ryū Keiichirō, this was the first film adaptation of his work, aired as a special drama on TV Asahi on December 28, 1995. Hidekazu Akai, starring in his first lead role in a period drama, lived up to expectations with a powerful performance, embodying a giant wild man and delivering impressive sword fights. The script and direction were handled by acclaimed director Toshiya Itō, whose sharp direction and bold lighting made the drama a visually compelling experience.

Once praised as "Yotsuya Masamune," the renowned swordsmith Kiyomaro (Nishikinosuke Yorozuya) was living in seclusion in the mountains with his apprentice Onimaro (Hidekazu Akai). However, Kiyomaro, who had begun to suffer from trembling hands due to alcohol and could no longer forge satisfactory swords, one day confided in Onimaro. Thirteen years ago, Kiyomaro had a secret relationship with a girl who served in the Ōoku (the shogun’s harem), but after she caught the shogun’s attention, she took her own life. Her father, the leader of the Iga undercover agents (Isao Natsuyagi), blamed Kiyomaro for her death and sent assassins after him, forcing Kiyomaro to flee. Along the way, regretting that he had made many cheap swords just to earn some travel money, he asked Onimaro to find and discard these worthless blades. When an assassin suddenly appeared, Kiyomaro stopped Onimaro from pursuing him, but that night, Kiyomaro committed suicide. Following his will, Onimaro set out on a journey. News of Kiyomaro’s suicide also reached the Iga agents’ residence in Edo, but the leader’s anger did not subside. He ordered his second daughter Orin (Eriko Tamura) and his subordinate Hattori Koheita (Hirotaro Honda) to find Kiyomaro’s worthless swords before Onimaro could, disgrace his name, and thus avenge the grudge of the daughter who took her own life.
