I tested ten different USB video capture devices, and none were able to digitize video from VHS and 8mm tapes without problems. But for around $20 on eBay you can get a device which does a much better job because it includes a built-in time base corrector (TBC). The only catch is that it requires a FireWire (IEEE-1394) port.
