A closer look at the assassination of President James Garfield

LiveNOW’s Austin Westfall is taking a closer look at a presidential assassination that helped shape American history. Although not remembered as well as the killings of Lincoln or Kennedy, the death of President James Garfield is the subject of a recent Netflix series and reminds Americans of how tragic that moment in history was.

There are still lessons to be learned from the assassination even today, including from the shooting itself to the medical missteps that followed. Presidential historian and author James Robenalt joins Austin Westfall to discuss the unfinished presidency of James Garfield.

According to historians, it was less than four months after President Garfield took office that he was shot by Charles Guiteau at a railroad station in Washington DC in July of 1881. Garfield was hit twice.
