TEMPUS Collection - Original Edition and Creation - IP - All rights reserved. - TEMPUS Collection Educational Programme - Franz Liszt (1811-1886) stands as one of the towering figures of 19th-century Romantic music, revolutionizing piano performance and composition. Born in Raiding, Hungary, his prodigious talent was evident early on, leading him to study in Vienna and Paris. He quickly earned renown as the preeminent keyboard virtuoso of his era, often referred to as the "Paganini of the piano" due to his dazzling technique and electrifying stage presence. Liszt fundamentally transformed the concept of the piano recital, coining the term and pioneering the practice of performing entirely from memory in a theatrical, solo setting. His celebrated period of "Pianistic Transcendentism" also involved extensive touring across Europe, where his personal magnetism and technical mastery created a widespread cultural phenomenon known as "Lisztomania."
Beyond his career as a performer, Liszt was a profoundly influential and innovative composer. He is credited with inventing the symphonic poem, a single-movement orchestral work that illustrates or evokes the content of a poem, painting, or literary idea (e.g., Les Préludes). This innovation epitomizes the Romantic ideal of merging music with other art forms. Furthermore, his late works, characterized by experimental harmonic language and the extensive use of thematic transformation, foreshadowed the atonal developments of the 20th century. In his later life, Liszt abandoned the stage to serve as Kapellmeister in Weimar and eventually took minor orders in Rome, dedicating himself primarily to teaching and composition, thereby securing his legacy as a mentor and musical futurist.
