Soldiers in Guinea-Bissau announced Wednesday on state television that they have seized power in the country and deposed the president.
It follows reports of gunfire near the presidential palace earlier in the day.
President Umaro Sissoco Embaló told French media Wednesday that he had been deposed and arrested. His arrest comes just three days after national elections were held in Guinea-Bissau.
The military high command claims it uncovered a plot to “destabilize” the country involving domestic and foreign nationals. It has suspended the electoral process and closed the country’s borders.
Guinea-Bissau has seen four coups and numerous attempts since it achieved independence, including a reported attempted coup in October.
This is the latest in a number of coups that have taken place across Western Africa in recent years.
