Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world
Western and northwestern Greece experienced a series of storms accompanied by torrential rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. The regions of Ipyros, Kastoria, and the island of Corfu were hit hardest.
In the Ipyros region, up to 155 mm of rain fell in 72 hours (in Paramythia) – approximately 50 days' worth. In Vovousa, 109 mm fell, and in Pramanta, 101 mm. Floods inundated streets, basements, and roads in Ioannina, Igoumenitsa, and Tzoumerka, turning local roads into rivers. More than 6,000 lightning strikes were recorded in the region and in the northern Ionian Sea. Landslides blocked roads, residents were evacuated, and sections of roads and cable networks were damaged.
In Kastoria and the Nestorio region, the Aliakmonas River overflowed, damaging farmland, contaminated drinking water sources, and farmers faced difficulties evacuating their livestock. In Corfu, heavy rain caused power outages, fallen trees, localized landslides, and building damage, especially in the northern part of the island.
In the Arta region, particularly in Georgiou Karaiskakis and Central Tzoumerki, landslides occurred, and mountain streams overflowed their banks. In Filippiada (Preveza), streets turned into raging torrents, and the municipal stadium was completely submerged. The Epirus Fire Department received 437 emergency calls in just one day—pumping out water, clearing fallen trees, and rescuing people.
A state of emergency has been declared in the municipalities of Zagori, Filiata, and Ziros. In Thesprotia, the Kalamas River rose, flooding fields and citrus orchards, particularly in the areas of Vrysella and Sagiada. Meteorologists attribute the intense rainfall to orographic upwelling: moist air from the Ionian Sea rose up the slopes of the Pindus Mountains, intensifying the rainfall.
