It was released on 15 September 1997 by Eternal Records as the lead single from their debut studio album, ''Sunmachine'' (1998), although early editions were stated to be from an album named Super Dario Land. The song heavily samples the 1985 track "Life in a Northern Town" by dream pop band the Dream Academy.
The song reached top-five positions in many European music charts. It also topped the US Billboard Dance Club Play chart following its American release in May 1998. In the United Kingdom, the song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart whilst Elton John's "Candle in the Wind 1997" was at number one.
The song was featured in a dance montage in the final episode of the series Derry Girls.
