Viral video recorder, subject react to indictment of BPD officer

A Baltimore police officer is facing several charges after he was caught on camera chasing a man down in his police cruiser two weeks ago.

Robert Parks, a five-year BPD veteran, was indicted on charges including attempted second-degree murder, Baltimore City State's Attorney Ivan Bates announced Wednesday.

"I was happy, I was happy that they realized he needed more than a suspension," said Mr. Smith, the man shown in the viral video nearly getting run over. "(Parks) kept asking me to come to him and I didn't understand. I was trying to figure out what he wanted. When he didn't explain to me what he wanted me to come to him for, I just walked away."

The video shows a brief exchange between Parks and Smith before Smith begins walking down an alleyway off of Wylie Avenue in Park Heights. After that, the video shows Parks get back into his police cruiser and begin accelerating towards Smith. The chase lasted for over a minute and eventually showed Parks crashing through the fence of a person's yard.

"You see on camera, I didn't run or anything, I just walked away. You can see I asked him what (he wanted), he never explained," Smith said. "(I heard the car), that's when I turned my head and I tried to get away but he actually did hit me, I'm in physical therapy."

Smith said he's grateful his friend, Slick Brown, caught it all on camera.
