Seen from across the city, smoke billowed Wednesday from a multiple-alarm commercial building fire on Newkirk Street in Southeast Baltimore. A WBAL-TV 11 News crew at the scene reports the Gold Bond Building Products facility was on fire. Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said the company manufactures drywall and gypsum board. Wallace said the fire was called in around 10:42 a.m. and firefighters encountered heavy smoke at 2301 block of S. Newkirk St. The fire chief said around 1:15 p.m. that the fire was not under control but it was contained.
