In the village of Nandgaon, Uttar Pradesh, women are forced to go to open fields in the early morning due to the lack of proper toilets. Keshav, a simple man, lives with his deeply religious and superstitious father, Pandit Vimalnath Sharma, who makes him marry a buffalo believing it will bring him good fortune. Later, Keshav falls in love with Jaya, an educated and strong-minded girl, and convinces his father to approve their marriage through a clever trick involving an artificial thumb.
After marriage, Jaya is upset to find there is no toilet in their house and refuses to follow the village’s old practices. Keshav tries temporary fixes, but she eventually leaves him in frustration. Determined to win her back, Keshav urges the villagers and officials to support building toilets. Despite resistance from his father and the local leaders, Keshav stands firm and protects the toilet he builds.
When Jaya files for divorce, the case attracts public and media attention, prompting government action for sanitation reform. Eventually, Keshav’s father realises the importance of a toilet when his wife is injured and cannot walk to the fields. He finally supports the change. The court later unites Keshav and Jaya, and the village begins constructing toilets, marking a new beginning for better hygiene and dignity for all
