A Baltimore County woman is sharing her story about a sometimes unfamiliar form of cancer. Cancer comes in many forms: Some people may be familiar with the Breast Cancer Susceptibility (BRCA) gene mutations, but what about checkpoint kinase 2 (CHEK2)? A person's chance of developing breast cancer — without a family history or any other special circumstance — is about 12%. The BRCA gene causes about 55% to 72% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. CHEK2 is considered a moderate risk breast cancer gene that has about a 23% to 27% chance of being diagnosed.
