President Andry Rajoelina has fled Madagascar as nationwide anti-government protests escalate into a full political crisis. Opposition leader Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko confirmed Rajoelina’s departure on October 13, reportedly aboard a French military aircraft. RFI claims he struck a deal with French President Emmanuel Macron before leaving the country.
His planned national address was abruptly canceled after his escape. The move came just hours after CAPSAT announced it had assumed control of Madagascar’s armed forces, following military support for protesters in the capital. Earlier attempts by Rajoelina to ease tensions—including appointing a new prime minister—failed to calm public anger.
The protests, led largely by youth groups, began on September 25 over water and electricity shortages and quickly evolved into a broader political uprising. This marks the second Gen Z–driven government ousting in recent weeks.
