Chaos in New York Today! Coastal Flooding Swept Away Homes, Cars in New Jersey
A powerful storm was pummeling the U.S. East Coast with heavy rains, gusty winds and coastal flooding Sunday, with states of emergency declared in New Jersey and New York City and the surrounding region. Coastal flood warnings were in effect for much of the East Coast, including NYC, from the nor'easter that began slamming parts of the Carolinas on Saturday, and which prompted water rescues in Columbus County, N.C., and Georgetown, S.C., on Sunday. Coastal flood-related advisories stretched from northern Florida to New England from the storm that's set to linger into Tuesday, according to a Sunday National Weather Service forecast discussion. There were reports of tidal flooding across Delaware and southern New Jersey Sunday and moderate to major coastal flooding was expected again with high tides overnight and into Monday, the NWS' Philadelphia/Mount Holly office said in posts on its social media accounts. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall continued along the Carolinas' coast, where the NWS' Weather Prediction Center warned of a level 2/4 risk of excessive rainfall amid the threat of scattered instances of flash flooding. "More isolated instances of flash flooding will also be possible along the coast of the Mid-Atlantic to southern New England, with the threat for southern New England lingering into Monday," per the NWS discussion. A state of emergency has been declared in New York City, Long Island and Westchester County in New York as a powerful nor’easter that was tearing up the East Coast slammed portions of the Northeast on Sunday and Monday with powerful winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding. Rodanthe and Buxton lost nine beachfront homes to the encroaching surf earlier this month, and several more are on the verge of collapsing. Road crews with the Department of Transportation worked furiously to clear Highway 12 for the storm-battered areas of Hatteras Island. Parts of the highway were closed on Sunday due to significant flooding. Water levels climbed into minor flood stage on Sunday afternoon in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and shut down Route 40 and Route 30 in both directions in and out of the city. Daytona Beach, which has been hit hard by flooding in the past, didn't see many problems on Friday. But the intersection of Beach Street and Fairview Avenue, which sits low and has been flood-prone for many decades, was a trouble spot.
