Synopsis:
The story begins with Zhang Liang and Liu Bang joining Xiang Liang’s forces, biding their time in obscurity. Seizing upon King Huai of Chu’s decree that “whoever enters the Pass first shall be king,” they laid the foundation for their grand strategy, their true abilities going unnoticed by Fan Zeng. On the march to capture Xianyang, Liu Bang received counsel from Chen Hui, a retainer of Nanyang’s magistrate Chang Yi, to adopt a policy of benevolence and grant amnesty to surrendered cities—accelerating the downfall of the Qin dynasty as the puppet ruler Ziying surrendered.
Once in Xianyang, Liu Bang revealed his political ambition, while Empress Lü also displayed her thirst for power, planting the seeds of Zhang Liang’s later decision to retire. The narrative unfolds through pivotal moments: the cunning contest at the Feast at Hongmen, the recommendation of Han Xin (played by Wu Yue), the tense standoff at Yingyang, and the strategic partitioning of territories. It culminates in the Battle of Gaixia, where the famous “Song of Chu Heard on All Sides” strategy broke Xiang Yu (played by Hu Jun).
Zhang Liang ultimately withdraws from the political stage after his triumphs, echoing Liu Bang’s historic praise of him as the one who “devised strategies from the command tent that determined victories a thousand miles away.”
