TC Complete Edition - Combined Unabridged Edit of Parts I and II - Tchaikovsky (Russian: Чайковский), released in 1970, is a landmark Soviet biopic chronicling the final decades of the life of composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893). The film explores the composer’s personal struggles and professional triumphs, from the pressures of his public career and complex personal relationships to the creation of enduring masterpieces such as The Queen of Spades (opera, 1890) and the Symphony No. 6 in B minor, “Pathétique” (1893). Distinguished by its meticulous period recreation, careful use of colour and visual composition, and the integration of music as both narrative and emotional expression, the film secured international recognition with Academy Award (Oscars) nominations for Best Foreign Language Film and for Best Original Song Score and Adaptation.
At the heart of the film is Innokenty Smoktunovsky, one of the most influential actors of the 20th century in both theatre and film. Celebrated for his profound, psychologically nuanced performances, Smoktunovsky is especially renowned for what are considered among the finest cinematic interpretations of Shakespeare’s Hamlet (1964) and King Lear (1971). In Tchaikovsky, his performance is enhanced by a striking and almost uncanny physical resemblance to the composer, which deepens the film’s credibility and emotional resonance. Smoktunovsky’s portrayal combines vulnerability and intensity, embodying the conflict between public acclaim and private despair with rare authenticity. Directed by Igor Talankin, the film represents one of the most ambitious artistic undertakings of late Soviet cinema. In recent years, the TEMPUS Collection, under the artistic direction of film director, conductor, and composer Maximianno Cobra, has carried out painstaking image and audio restoration from the rare, damaged surviving prints, ensuring that both Talankin’s achievement and Smoktunovsky’s iconic performance can be experienced with renewed clarity and vitality by contemporary and future audiences.
