The Howard Street Tunnel, originally built in the 1890s, reopened Friday in Baltimore. The tunnel has been a vital shipping line artery, but it became a corridor bottleneck because double-stacked trains couldn't squeeze through — until now. The project had been talked about for nearly 50 years but had come to fruition over the last few years. The tunnel had been closed since February, but now provides seamless double-stacked rail capacity from Maine to Florida.
