Starting next week, having a lead foot will become very costly if a speed camera catches you. A new, escalating penalty structure goes into effect on Oct. 1. The maximum penalty, dependent on how high over the speed limit you drive, will be $425. The escalating fines have been in place for construction zones since January, and will replace the previous structure of a $40 flat-rate penalty for speeding.
