Funding cuts lead to layoff risk for University System of Maryland

Layoffs could hit the University System of Maryland amid funding cuts to the state's public universities. Now, leaders are urging state lawmakers to provide support. Jay Perman, chancellor of USM, addressed the Maryland General Assembly's House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, emphasizing the crippling effect of federal and state funding reductions on Maryland universities. Coppin State University, one of 12 public schools within the system, is experiencing the impact of the cuts. Coppin President Anthony Jenkins told 11 News the university has sustained an 11% cut to their state-based budget over the last three years.
