California bans masked police officers under new “No Secret Police Act”

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed SB 627, known as the “No Secret Police Act,” making the state the first in the nation to ban most law enforcement officers, including immigration agents, from wearing masks during official duties. The law follows masked ICE raids in Los Angeles that raised fears in immigrant communities. Supporters say the law improves accountability and prevents impersonation of officers, while opponents argue it puts law enforcement at greater risk. The measure takes effect January 1 and could face legal challenges.
