Venezuela has launched large-scale military exercises on its Caribbean island of La Orchila as tensions escalate with the United States.
The drills are being held on the orders of President Nicolas Maduro.
Thousands of troops are taking part in what officials describe as a defensive response to US military activity in the region.
Venezuela said the drills involve 12 navy ships, 22 aircraft, special forces, intelligence units, submarines and drones.
It added that military measures in the Caribbean would be ‘doubled’ in case of possible armed conflict.
