Sri Lanka's president made a sudden visit to Katchatheevu island, arriving by navy speedboat while in Jaffna to launch welfare projects. This unannounced trip follows remarks by TVK chief Vijay, who had recently raised the issue of retrieving the island for India to benefit Tamil Nadu fishermen. During the visit to the small island, the president went to St. Anthony's church and a naval base. Upon returning to Jaffna, the president stated that the government would "protect the land, the island, the waters and also the sky for the future generation." The island is a traditional resting and net-mending spot for fishermen from Tamil Nadu. Indian fishermen are frequently arrested and their boats seized by Sri Lankan authorities for fishing in the waters surrounding Katchatheevu.
