Ethnic tensions emerged in the early 20th century, after the formation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes in 1918. Only after World War II did Tito unify the country in 1945. But after his death in 1980, nationalist rivalries reignited - plunging Yugoslavia into chaos.
