The US vice-president arrived on Friday at Chevening House in Kent, the foreign secretary’s country residence, for talks before he begins a family holiday in the Cotswolds.
Vance was critical of the UK’s change of position on the recognition of a Palestinian state, saying that he didn’t “know what it would mean”. He said he would be discussing the issue with Lammy, along with the war in Ukraine and President Trump’s potential meeting with President Putin.
Vance said the US would not follow suit. America’s goal was to solve the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and prevent Hamas posing a threat to Israel in future, he said.
“Obviously, the United Kingdom is going to make its decision. We have no plans to recognise a Palestinian state,” he said. “I don’t know what it would mean to really recognise a Palestinian state, given the lack of functional government there.
