Synopsis:
The film centers on a poverty-stricken mountainous region, where a boy named Sha Yang, gifted with a natural talent for running, encounters the city by chance. There, he forms a deep and touching friendship with Wen Fei, a young athlete battling leukemia. As their bond develops, the story of the protagonist resonates deeply with the audience.
At a sports academy in Beijing, the national youth long-distance running selection competition is about to begin. Sha Yang, a young athlete chosen from a poor rural area, stands at the starting line alongside his peers.
With the referee’s gunshot, a group of 12- to 15-year-old boys take off, their long legs swiftly moving. Running shoes flash through the air, city buildings blur behind them, and the roadside crowd cheers them on. As Sha Yang runs, his running shoes seem to vanish—he’s barefoot now. Beneath him, the smooth asphalt transforms into a rugged, uneven mountain path.
A lanky, mischievous-looking boy races through a crowd of middle school classmates like the wind. Barefoot, he dashes past the mountain pass and disappears from sight. His classmate, Erhua, asks Shahu why he runs so fast. Shahu replies, “Sha Yang’s hungry. He wants to get home early for dinner.”
Sha Yang’s home is eight kilometers away from the town’s middle school. Children from better-off families board at school and only return home on weekends. But Sha Yang’s family is too poor to afford that, so he begins a daily eight-kilometer round trip—thus starting his long journey as a runner.
