Howard County hikes fines for short-term house, pool rentals

The Howard County Council approved emergency legislation to increase fines for residents who offer their private homes and pools for short-term rentals. The County Council held an emergency legislative public hearing Wednesday morning in response to residents' complaints in Columbia and other areas about loud and rowdy pool parties attended by 100 or more guests who, in some cases, have created problems. Some county residents who spoke at the hearing called the parties a nuisance and a safety issue. Others described the benefits of renting their pool to help others, including a swimming instructor who gives private lessons.
