In 1934, Walt Disney released Orphan’s Benefit—a black-and-white Mickey Mouse short featuring the debut of Donald Duck.

In this video, we uncover the real story behind the Orphan’s Benefit remake—from the studio’s push into Technicolor, to a failed experiment in reviving old cartoons, to a fascinating moment where Mickey’s character was losing his edge… and Donald Duck was just beginning to rise.
