July 14, 2025-Hard rain and slow-moving storms triggered flash flood emergencies in New Jersey and New York City-soils and streets turned into rivers, cars were washed away, and infrastructure was crippled. In New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy declared a flash flood emergency as more than six inches of rain fell in a few hours, with the hardest-hit areas including North Plainfield, Watchung, Somerville, New Providence, Scotch Plains, and the Turnpike in Linden.

Meanwhile, in NYC, line 1 of the subway was closed, as was 28th Street station as stairs and tracks were submerged in water. Thousands of flights were canceled, including from JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark. The National Weather Service (NWS) said the drainage system was unable to accommodate the excessive rainfall.
