SOHRA is a paean for the glory of the Sohra of yore, the cradle of Khasi literacy and literature and the bedrock of Khasi civility. It celebrates the golden past of Sohra and rejoices the abundance of Sohra natural landscape dotted with amazing waterfalls and cascades that make the gorges sing their own symphonies. The song also highlights Sohra as the nourisher of poets and the land of caves and caverns from whose fountains spring the eternal songs. Sohra is also the playfield where the rain, the wind and the thunder and lightning make their frolic and tumultuous dance.
The verse recitation from Soso Tham’s poem, KI SNGI BA LA LEIT NOH, recalls the poet’s yearning for an imminent visit to Sohra where he would once again relive and celebrate the joy that Sohra infused in him as a child. But the poet knew too well that when he would get to Sohra he wouldn’t be able to experience the same joy that he had felt as a boy. That’s why he wished he was a child once again. Like the poet, the singer is eager and ready to see and feel the Sohra that he’s left behind during his sojourn elsewhere.
The sense of disillusionment that the poet felt is multiplied many folds for modern lovers of Sohra who have lived far away from it and who really come back to settle again in this town where they were born and brought up. Sohra is gradually losing the pivotal role it had played in the bygone days in the fields of education, religion, culture and politics. It is living in the shadow of its past glory.
So the second part of the song is a lamentation of this great loss. Even in the cacophony of endless national and international tourists and visitors, the sense of cultural, civil and moral desolation pervades. The angst is intensified by the knowledge, like Soso Tham’s, that only nostalgia and the impossible return to childhood can provide solace to the crying heart of Sohra’s beloved children who still care for her.
