New interactive tool helps Marylanders visualize future flood risks

A new interactive tool is helping Marylanders visualize past and predicted flood risks. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources released the Maryland Coastal Flood Explorer to help people plan ahead. While rainfall and storms can exacerbate flooding conditions for places that already experience coastal flooding, the Flood Explorer could help them prepare. For businesses at the Annapolis City Dock, coastal flooding is a familiar event — one that impacts the flow of business. "(Floods happen) once a month, a couple of times a month now," said Ryan Lamy, the owner of Pip's Dock Street Dogs. "We still have to shut down as soon as we get water inside the doorway. We have to close.” And flood risks are increasing as the years go by. According to NASA's flooding analysis tool, the average number of minor flood days per year in Annapolis has quadrupled since the 1970s. Dylan Taillie is a coastal analyst with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. He and his team built the Coastal Flood Explorer to help people visualize past and potential flooding — and better prepare.
