Board of Estimated approved funding for promotion of the 9-8-8 crisis help line

Baltimore's Board of Estimates approved a $10 million grant to Behavioral Health Systems Baltimore. The money, coming from the City's Opioid Restitution Fund, is for the 988 crisis help line. The city will use the money over a five-year period to promote the service In 2024, Baltimore received nearly 16,000 988 calls. That's about 52% of the calls from the entire Central Maryland region. City leaders said the system is working but they argue more people need to know they can call 988 instead of 911. Faith Leach is the chief administrative officer in Baltimore City. "And so, we now have the funding and the resources to, you know, do the groundwork and to get into the community and work with community-based organizations so that they're educated about 988, so that our residents are educated about 988 and all the behavioral health resources that are available through the 988 help line," Leach said. The 988 line is available 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The hotline provides direct assistance from trained mental health professionals for those in crisis.
