The persistent rain is keeping Maryland plumbers busy draining water-filled basements. Prime Plumbing tells 11 News, there's something every homeowner can do right now to prevent potential damage. Prime Plumbing president Tom Shrum says now is the time to check your sump pump. He says that too often, homeowners realize there's an issue too late, when water is already in the basement. This week, Prime Plumbing has answered plenty of calls. “We're getting flooding calls, flooded basements, sump pumps failing. It can be the culprit. Stopped-up drains can be the culprit. We even had one where a tree uprooted from all the rain, and it actually damaged the lines in the front yard,” Shrum said. A sump pump will drain a flooded basement, but it must have the right power to remove the water faster than it is entering the room. That's why you should know when it was last replaced, with most having a lifespan of around five years, and that it works by pouring water nearby and making sure it kicks on. “If you have a sump pump, it's a huge deal if it's not working, because otherwise the water is going to come in, and if it has nowhere to go, then it's going to fill the basement,” Shrum said.
