A mediation session is underway between the Baltimore County Teachers Union and school officials over teacher pay raises. The school board approved a 5% raise for this year in its latest contract, but now says the district doesn't have the money to fund it. One unresolved issue is that the agreed-upon contract did not come with a funding plan. School officials have pitched ideas ranging from a reduced pay increase to a delayed one. Union negotiators said mediator Ira Jaffe is the most optimistic person in the room about reaching an agreement. Union president Cindy Sexton, who is not directly involved in the talks, said a compromise is possible. "We are willing to have conversations about what we are willing to do to reach some sort of agreement. Naturally, we want what was promised to us. A contract is a contract," Sexton said.
