When tragedy strikes, channeling grief into something positive is a journey. For Monique McLeod, it's a calling from God to help prevent another family from experiencing the pain she's living with — the death of her young grandson from a tragic gun accident. "He was just special," McLeod said. "He really was." Messiah Coleman's life was tragically cut short on July 2, 2024. In a flash, the lives of his family and his community would change forever. "His dad does armed security, and he put it on top of the safe," said McLeod. "(He) didn’t secure it all the way. Messiah wanted to try and touch it, and he shot himself.” He was just 3 years old. The Head Start program that Messiah attended in Howard County planted a memorial garden in the playground he once played on. His picture hangs above it. "Gun safety is so important and so well-needed," said McLeod. "So well-needed.” In response, McLeod started the Messiah Coleman Foundation. Her motto — "Faith over fear, and pain into purpose. Keep pushing!"
