Exclusive: Acting DJS Secretary on changes coming to department

In an exclusive interview, the acting Department of Juvenile Services Secretary, Betsy Fox Tolentino details her decision to make significant changes to the agencies ankle monitoring policies. On Friday, 11 News Investigates broke the story on and spoke with Tolentino about what is being done, why and next steps for the department. The changes were prompted by the acting secretary's meetings with law enforcement and state's attorneys. and she said they are aligned with best practices across the country. She feels confident that the changes will work. "I am very confident this is going to work because it is a very targeted approach to ensure that we are really addressing the needs of our young people who are in the community on electronic monitoring and continue to re-offend," Tolentino said. 11 News Investigates broke the story on DJS electronic monitoring policy changes. As of July 3, any youth re-arrested while wearing an electronic monitor will be held in detention until their next court appearance. The DJS deputy secretary of community operations will oversee and monitor all detention decisions to ensure consistency.
