French Prez Macron spoke to Russian Prez Putin after long silence since September 2022. The ice-breaker conversation centered on Iran-Israel conflict and the war in Ukraine. French President pushed for ceasefire: Macron’s office confirmed after two-hour long dialogue President Macron stayed in close contact with Ukraine’s Zelenskyy before and after the dialogue. He also updated U.S. President Donald Trump – ensuring key allies were in the loop. Russia stood firm on Tehran’s right to ‘peaceful nuclear development’ under global nonproliferation treaty. France, however, believed Iran’s growing nuclear capabilities require attention of UNSC’s permanent members’. Notably, Iran’s parliament voted to suspend cooperation with IAEA, after US & Israel’s strikes. Western leaders remain skeptical, as Tehran denied development of nuclear weapons. On Ukraine, divide b/w two leader was clear – Putin accused West of ignoring Russia’ security concern, while Macron reaffirmed France’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. While the two leaders remain far apart on key issues, they agreed to keep talking.
