Billy Collins Jr. was born in the state of Tennessee, and from an early age his path seemed predetermined, as his father was a professional boxer. Under his father's guidance, Billy began to learn the language of boxing.
By the age of 21, Billy had become an excellent boxer with a promising future. He had already amassed 14 professional wins, 11 of them by knockout. The public adored him and gave him the nickname "Irish", a name that stuck with him.
He was on his way toward a title shot, but on June 16, 1983, a man stood in his path — Puerto Rican boxer Luis Resto, a two-time Golden Gloves champion and a tough journeyman with ambitions.
However, the main figure in this tragedy was not Resto, but his trainer, Panama Lewis, who had a reputation for being an extremely ruthless coach and was willing to go to great lengths for his fighters to win.
There were rumors that Lewis used to mix asthma medication into his boxers’ water to give them a performance-enhancing boost — essentially acting like a form of doping — though nothing was ever proven.
