Synopsis:
Jiang Shan has loved rockets since childhood and dreamed of becoming an aerospace expert. On the eve of studying abroad in the United States, he marries his childhood sweetheart, Hai Yuan, who stays behind to care for his ailing mother.
Years later, after completing his studies, Jiang Shan declines his mentor’s invitation to stay in the U.S. and resolutely returns to China to work at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, dedicating himself to rocket development.
Moved by his love for the motherland and faith in China's space program, Qian Cheng, a Hong Kong businessman, decides to entrust his privately-funded communication satellite — "Hong Kong Star" — to be launched by China’s satellite center. He sends his daughter, Qian Wang, to the mainland for an inspection.
Qian Wang is deeply impressed by the dedication, perseverance, and selfless spirit of young Chinese scientists like Jiang Shan. Touched by their commitment, she begins to reflect on her own privileged and arrogant ways, and gradually develops feelings for the humble, soft-spoken Jiang Shan.
However, Jiang Shan politely declines her affections in a letter, reaffirming his unwavering love for his wife, Hai Yuan.
Later, Qian Wang visits the Xichang base and meets Hai Yuan, now a local elementary school teacher. Moved by Hai Yuan’s kindness, resilience, and selflessness, Qian Wang learns about the desperate need for teachers in the mountainous region and decides to stay and teach at a "Hope School."
With the joint efforts of compatriots from Hong Kong and Chinese scientists, "Hong Kong Star" is successfully launched just before the 1997 Hong Kong handover. By then, Jiang Shan collapses from overwork. Hai Yuan stays by his bedside, gently telling him the satellite has made it into orbit.
