Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind (1988 TV HQ)

In 1987, the Pet Shop Boys performed a synth-pop version of "Always on My Mind" in Love Me Tender, a television special produced by Central Independent Television for ITV in the United Kingdom. Commemorating the tenth anniversary of Presley's death, the programme featured various popular acts of the time performing cover versions of his songs. The Pet Shop Boys' performance was so well-received that the duo decided to record the song and release it as a single.

This hi-NRG, dance-pop, and disco version became the UK's Christmas number-one single that year – edging out "Fairytale of New York" by the Pogues – spending four weeks atop the chart. It also reached number four on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming the duo's fifth and final top-10 hit on that chart.

One of Pet Shop Boys' most beloved releases by the public, as of May 2024, it is the second-most streamed Pet Shop Boys song in the UK with 53 million streams.
