Eight Maryland counties and Baltimore City are classified as "sanctuary jurisdictions," according to the Trump administration. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's website defines a sanctuary jurisdiction as: "Cities, counties and states that are deliberately and shamefully obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws endangering American communities." More than 500 "sanctuary jurisdictions" were put on notice across the country. DHS officials claim the jurisdictions are deliberately obstructing the enforcement of immigration laws, endangering American communities. Several leaders of the jurisdictions said the White House's classification caught them off guard, some saying they learned of the designation through news reports.
