Terrifying footage shows the moment of the eruption at the Gaomi Youdao Chemical plant in the city of Weifang at around midday local time.
A worker is seen running along a gangway as the fireball erupts around him.
The employee then manages to reach a neighbouring tank as the path behind him is engulfed by flames.
