Steven Gerrard's first appearance in a Merseyside derby resulted in victory - Liverpool's first in the fixture for five years. It didn't seem particularly likely after Olivier Dacourt had given the visitors the lead, but the Reds turned it around for their first league win in two months.
Robbie Fowler's brace, the first of which was celebrated with a notorious sniffing gesture on the line, turned the game around and Patrik Berger's volley extended the lead. But Francis Jeffers' goal made for a nervy finale.
On an emotional day that had featured a minute's silence to mark the 10th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, Gerrard ensured that Liverpool would get the win by clearing Danny Cadamarteri's shot off the line late on.
