President Donald Trump is expected to greet the Prime Minister of Canada at 11:30 a.m. EST. Then, the president and PM Mark Carney will participate in a bilateral meeting at the Oval Office around 11:45 a.m. EST.
This high stakes meeting is the first face-to-face discussion between Trump and Carney. It comes as Trump has imposed tariffs on Canada and said that Canada should be the 51st state. Carney was a political novice, elected on an anti-Trump platform. Canadian voters saw him as a steady hand to negotiate with Trump, in part due to his background in policymaking and as a private-sector executive.
