SNAP urges victims to take legal action amid changes to state law

Advocates are pressing survivors of child clergy sexual abuse to file court action soon due to a change in Maryland state law. Members of the Survivor's Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) are warning victims that if they plan to sue the Archdiocese of Baltimore, they must now file two federal lawsuits by May 31, even if they have already filed a claim. Members of SNAP point to changes to the Maryland Child Victims Act of 2023 set to take effect on June 1 after the legislation amending it was signed into law by the governor at the end of April. The changes cap legal fees and consolidates incidents of abuse. It also cuts damages for private institutions, like the Catholic Church, by more than half, from $1.5 million to $700,000.
