The Rev. Dr. Harold Carter Jr. was the calm in a storm of chaos that swirled around his church. Baltimore's clergy members found themselves called to action on the day when unrest turned violent. That day — April 27, 2015 — began with the funeral at New Shiloh Baptist Church for 25-year-old Freddie Gray, who died while in city police custody. Only hours after leading Gray's funeral, Carter set out to return to his west Baltimore church. He saw a video on television of destruction and spoke with a fellow pastor about the indelible day.
