A list of my 65 favorite songs from the 2002 video game, Grand Theft Auto Vice City
If you were a kid who played video games and grew up in the 2000s, one game series you must have played or heard of is Grand Theft Auto. For me, one of my favorite installments in the series has to be Grand Theft Auto Vice City, first released in 2002.
For those who don't know, the game is set in Vice City, a stylized and fictionalized version of Miami in the year 1986. You play as mobster Tommy Vercetti (Ray Liotta), who after being released from prison, is sent down to Vice City to establish a foothold in the city's thriving drug trade. Playing the game, it's easy to see that the story, setting, aesthetics and atmosphere is heavily influenced by Miami Vice (1984-1989) and Scarface (1983).
Playing this game as a kid and teen in the 2000s, I would spend countless hours just getting lost in the world of Vice City, wearing pastel suits and driving in exotic sport cars like I was Sonny Crockett and Tony Montana, while listening to the music in the in-game radio stations.
Speaking of music, the most iconic and best feature of this game has to be its soundtrack, featuring classic 80s hits from genres such as hip hop, pop, funk, heavy metal, soft rock and new wave, and from artists like Run-DMC, Hall & Oates, Laura Branigan, Michael Jackson, Pointer Sisters, Mötley Crüe, Judas Priest, Foreigner, Toto, Jan Hammer, The Human League and A Flock of Seagulls.
In short, this game is what introduced and made me (and many kids who grew up in the 2000s) fall in love with the 80s.
